About

The integration of Eastern and Western psychology has emerged as a rich area of study, offering insights into the human mind and behavior from diverse cultural perspectives. This three-day conference aims to explore the theme of “Psychology as a catalyst for innovation, technology development, and sustainable human development,” focusing on how psychological insights and interventions can accelerate and facilitate various types of development—personal, social, organizational, educational, and even technological.

Trauma-Informed Care in Youth Mental Health

Professor Sarah Bendall
Professorial Fellow in Youth Mental Health
University of Melbourne

Sarah Bendall is a professorial fellow and clinical psychologist at Orygen and the Centre for Youth Mental Health, The University of Melbourne. She leads the Trauma and Youth Mental Health research unit at Orygen.

Her research focuses on examining the role of trauma in the development of psychosis, treating post-traumatic stress disorder in young people, and the development of evidence-based models of trauma-informed care in youth mental health services.

Prof Bendall completed graduate training in clinical psychology at the University of Auckland in New Zealand in 1995. Since joining the university in 2001, she undertook a PhD in the School of Psychological Sciences at the University of Melbourne, graduating in 2008. She has held a NHMRC Early Career Fellowship, and a McCusker Philanthropic Foundation Fellowship. She currently holds a NHMRC Investigator Grant to continue her work in understanding and treating trauma in young people with mental health difficulties.

Multiculturalism in Psychology Research

Associate Professor David Dalsky, Ph.D.

Kyoto University Institute for Liberal Arts and Sciences

David Dalsky (Ph.D., Social Psychology) is an associate professor at the Institute for Liberal Arts and Sciences, where he teaches academic writing courses for first-year students, and the Graduate School of Human and Environmental Studies, where he supervises Ph.D. and M.A. students and teaches a course on intercultural understanding pedagogy. He has been on the Kyoto University faculty since 2007.

David is the recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award and Excellence in Publication Award from The Japan Association of College English Teachers for Writing for Academic Purposes: 英作⽂を卒業して英語論⽂を書く(Hitsuji Press) and Team Teaching and Team Learning in the Language Classroom: Collaboration for Innovation in ELT (Routledge), respectively. He has written over 40 publications spanning three disciplines: social-cultural psychology, language education, and intercultural communication.

His current research interests involve applying theories and principles from indigenous psychology, cultural linguistics, and intercultural communication to virtual intercultural exchanges using an “inclusive practitioner research” approach with Fins, Germans, Chinese, Japanese, and Indonesians. David is a Fellow of the International Academy for Intercultural Research (IAIR). He is co-editor of a special issue on acculturation (2024) for IAIR’s flagship journal, the International Journal of Intercultural Relations.
